Why the Dark Web can’t be indexed by search engines?

The Dark Web refers to sites that require specific authorization or are simply hiding the IP running the site with encryption devices such as TOR(The Onion Router). They are publicly visible but cannot be indexed by search engines for multiple reasons.

Some of the major reasons are:

  • Robots Exclusion Standard
  • Paywall
  • Encryption and Privacy

1.What is Robots Exclusion Standard?

The robots exclusion standard, also known as the robots exclusion protocol or simply robots.txt, is a standard used by websites to communicate with web crawlers and other web robots. The standard specifies how to inform the web robot about which areas of the website should not be processed or scanned.

How it helps Dark Web?

Mainstream search engines are ethically bound to honor the robots exclusion standard.  The search engine must not index any site that signals that it wishes not to be indexed. HTTP servers of the Dark web tells the search engines to buzz off with a suitable robots.txt file and by recognizing their web crawlers and denying them access.

2.Paywall:

Another reason is that most of the “Dark Web” lives behind some form of paywall or another authentication scheme.  A paywall is a system that prevents Internet users from accessing a webpage’s content without a paid subscription.  If the web crawlers do not have the credentials to reach the data, they cannot index the data.

3.Encryption and Privacy:

One of the other reason are the layers of encryption and privacy that disallow systems like the Google spider access to crawl these sites. So if they cannot visit these sites and access their data, they cannot index them on search engines.

So, these are the reasons why It is impossible for search engines to crawl dark/deep web and bring their data in the search results. I hope this article will clear many confusions and you’ll be able to make a better sense of it. keep visiting ArtzStudion for more useful stuff.
