What is WordPress and how does it work and what exactly is this platform that everyone talks about? It is very likely that you are also asking yourself the same thing. And it does not surprise me, since it is estimated that more than 35% of the websites that are active today on the Internet were designed with this CMS.
On the contrary, you may not have heard wonders of it or you do not know how WordPress works and you have doubts about its practicality when creating both a page and a Blog. In short, you are one of those who still do not know what the real advantages are or what WP is really for. Quiet!
If when you get here, you also feel identified with these 2 cases, today I will clear all your doubts . Let’s start at the beginning, knowing its exact definition and the best applications this CMS can have in practice. Let’s do it!
What Is WordPress And How Does It Work?
WordPress is a free software or content management tool, also called CMS (Content Management System), designed to easily create and maintain a Blog, a website or an Online Store.
This platform was launched in 2003. Basically it was designed to create and manage any type of blog, that is, it was designed as an instrument that allowed texts and images to be uploaded and published in a specific format and design.
Among the peculiarities that have made it one of the most used managers in the world, is the fact that it is open source (open surce) and how simple it is to install a hosting and its subsequent use.
Now that you have discovered what WordPress is, if you are not familiar with computing or programming, another question that I would like to clarify would be the following:
Could I Also Install WordPress And Easily Create My Own Website Or Blog With İt?
In fact, after explaining why and what this CMS is used for, this time I have also prepared for you a complete guide on its installation and configuration.
Tutorial where you will learn step by step how to install WordPress in the hosting you have contracted and how to do a basic configuration of it and your template.
But not only that, but I will show you 2 ways to carry out that installation and in 2 different hosting providers (my favorites: Raiola Networks and Webempresa).
The first will be a very simple and fast way, you do it with just one Click. Ideal for those users who do not have much computer knowledge or do not dare to enter the backend of their server.
And, in addition, you will know a second more professional or complex way, where you will discover how to download WordPress from its official site and how to upload all the necessary files step by step to your hosting’s cPanel.
Why Should You Use WordPress If You Want To Own Your Own Website Or Blog?
Since its launch, it has become one of the most popular platforms for any user who wants to create an online store, a blog or, in general, a website of any type.
Currently, as I have already mentioned, more than 30% of all websites on the network work with it, from fan pages to some sites in countries, musicians or the main magazines in their digital version.
► Administration And Content Management
Many people do not realize that this platform is much more than a blogging tool. It is actually a content management system or CMS, as I mentioned earlier.
It is highly flexible, as it allows you to build and manage your own site, using only your browser and different types of plugins or add-ons.
Since the origins of the Internet, Web sites have been created in programming languages such as HTML, PHP and CSS, to format text, create page layouts, display images, etc.
Your browser is able to read that code, interpreting those labels, to represent and display the content of each particular page.
But today you can install the software on your own server in no more than 5 minutes and even in a single click, as we will see later.
Once installed, you can enter it, using your preferred browser, without having to learn to code or program.
► It Is Free And Open Source
First of all, being open source, there are thousands of people around the world constantly working to improve it.
And because of this, its download is also completely free.
By saying it is open source, I mean that hundreds of volunteers around the world constantly create and improve their software code, which has many advantages in terms of manual modifications.
In this sense, it is opposed to other closed-source CMS, in which case only the creative companies have access to the source code, so any user cannot modify it.
► Customization Through Plugins And Widgets
Furthermore, this CMS is incredibly flexible and has countless options.
For example, you have the possibility to edit and personalize your pages down to the smallest detail, thanks to the hundreds of accessories that exist today in the online market.
You can add plugins, widgets or install professional templates , which will allow you to create practically any type of Website you can imagine and customize it in detail, thanks to the hundreds of options presented by its premium themes.
► Your Website Will Be Compatible With Mobile Devices
Also, if you decide on a premium template, your site will surely be totally “responsive”.
That is, it will adapt without problems to any mobile device.
This, in addition to being an added advantage to use this CMS, is an aspect that can be penalized by Google today, when it comes to positioning a site on the Internet.

► Has A Short Learning Curve
Fourth, it is easy to use and learn. You don’t need to hire a web designer every time you want to make a small change to your site.
Plus, you can easily update and create your own content without having to learn to program in complicated computer languages, just like it was a few years ago.
In fact, if you know how to use basic formatting tools in a program like “Microsoft Word”, you can edit your site.
Also, if you’re having trouble, their official forum or online support is a great place to get answers to all your questions.
On the other hand, if you want to add custom functions or extras, it is easy to find help online (in addition to the aforementioned option to hire someone to help you).
The tutorials that you can find online to create a blog or even your corporate website with WordPress are numerous and there are also thousands of developers and designers specialized in this tool.
► It Favors The Organic Positioning Of Your Content
This platform is also very friendly with SEO positioning .
That is, it helps your content appear in prominent places in the results of search engines, such as Google.
Right from the start, it includes everything you need to make sure your content is optimized, essential for visibility and online success.
In addition, there are many plugins that will give you the appropriate recommendations to optimize all the basic aspects of your SEO On-Page , which will be of great help to you, especially if you do not have much knowledge in this discipline.
► You Have Full Control Of Your Website
Other free publishing platforms limit what you can and cannot do on your own website.
That I guess will not be, much less, to your liking, since you have few options and little flexibility.
In other words, if that platform ever closes or goes bankrupt for any reason, your content might even disappear from the Internet.
However, with this manager, you can import your content from other systems such as Blogger, Wix or Tumblr.
And you can also download a copy or easily export your data, if you want to stop using this tool and try a different one.
What Is WordPress For And What Types Of Sites Can I Design With It?
I am sure that, if you have just started in the online world and you have already heard about this platform, you will know that one of its main uses is to create a blog, either personal or somewhat more professional.
However, although this is true, we can also create other types of sites, such as corporate pages, eCommerces or digital magazines, as I explain below:
As I just mentioned, this is the best known and most frequently associated version of this CMS.
Let me explain: by default, this tool or CMS has many functionalities typical of this type of content platform, such as the possibility of adding «Entries» , which is the functionality where you must enter to create an article like this that you are reading right now .
In the same way, by default it also includes the alternative of adding «Media», which are all the audiovisual files with which you want to accompany your content (whether they are posts or pure pages).
Even all these contents can be organized by categories and, if you wish, add to your navigation menus. And that’s not to mention the advantage of having widgets where we link our most read articles, etc.
With these features, who would say that WordPress was not originally intended to create any type of blog?
2. Corporate Website
In addition to its more “blogger” version, this leading platform of today’s post can be perfectly with which you design your business page.
With it you can have a «digital house», where you inform your potential clients about basic aspects of your company such as:
- What are your services or products.
- How your company was born.
- Who are the members of your team.
- The way to contact you, etc.
From a corporate site with a single URL, also called «One Page» , to a Website like the one I have just described, with several sections that segment the information that the user wants to find in each of them.
An example of this type of corporate site is the official page of « Webescuela «, the business and training school of Digital Marketing of which I am a co-founder.
3. Online Stores
For a few years now, the creators of this platform realized the tremendous business that existed in the possibility of creating online stores with this platform.
Having so many followers of its versions for corporate websites and blogging, they thought of designing a plugin that would give the possibility of creating an eCommerce easily, intuitively and within reach of even users with not too much knowledge.
This is how the famous and powerful ” WooCommerce ” plugin was born , which is the option that most specialists recommend when starting with the combination of “WordPress + online product sales cart”.
Without a doubt, it is a great alternative to other classic and already known platforms for creating an eCommerce, such as PrestaShop or Magento.
In addition, WooCommerce has the advantage of being able to hundreds of free plugins (downloadable from the official repository of this CMS) that complement the highly advantageous functionalities that this platform already provides us.
It is also very frequent to see how more and more professionals from certain sectors such as photography create their own place on the Internet to show their work.
In the same way it happens with Web designers, who show all their creations, both their own and for external clients.
Creating a page in Portfolio mode is a highly recommended way to get clients, since you can show your best work in an attractive and highly visual way, including a contact mode, so that they can consult your questions or request collaboration quotes.
5. Landing Pages to capture leads
In case you have a business based on infoproducts, training or lead capture by some other form of monetization, you can create a well-optimized landing page with WordPress to achieve your goals.
This type of site is very frequent among professionals who use Facebook Ads advertising and you want to lead potential clients to those landing pages in order to carry out their conversions.
6. Static Pages Or Menu Card
Although this may not be the most popular option that we can carry out with this CMS, more and more businesses, restaurants and, in general, the hospitality and service sector establishments that use it.
It basically consists of just showing your potential customer what products are offered in the establishment, be they menus or another type of static catalog in an online version.
Thus, speaking of the example of restaurants, your potential client will be able to consult the type of food and drinks that you offer, where you can give details such as: if you have menus for diabetics, vegetarians, lactose allergies, etc.
How does WordPress work and how is it managed from your Backend or Dashboard?
As with other digital tools, all the configurations and actions to be carried out related to this CMS are managed and controlled from a main panel, called «Backend» or «Dashboard».
In this case, we will review each of the main options, so that, in this way, you can manage your content with some ease.
Main elements of the WordPress dashboard or desktop
In order to comment on each of the most important elements of the platform’s backend, I have named each of them with a numbering, as you can see in the image above:
This section is a kind of summary or compilation of what the program considers most important to you, as administrator or editor.
In short, the platform shows you in this area everything it considers most relevant that has happened today and in recent days, around your website (latest comments, upcoming events related to this CMS, etc.)
If you see an orange number in this section, it means that you have available updates belonging to plugins that you already have installed on your site, as well as the updates themselves to a higher version of WordPress.
Updating these plugins is not mandatory, but I do advise you to read what that specific update consists of, since they usually implement certain improvements that will not do anything but improve the operation of your platform.
All of them usually take less than 1 minute to update, so they will not consume too much time. Of course, while they are updated, if in another window you want to work on a post or a page, it usually will not allow it, especially if that plugin is directly related to what you intend to do.
These are simply the posts or articles on your blog.
Entering this option, you will go to the main screen, where you will be shown the list of all your content, both those published and those that you still have in “drafts” status.
When you click on this option, you will see how it is displayed, showing other alternative options, such as categories, labels and “add new entry”.
From here you can upload, view or insert all the audiovisual files, with which you want to illustrate your content or the pages of your site.
In order not to overload your hosting, my advice is to lower the weight of the images you intend to add, so that when loading the URL in question, they do not slow down their loading speed.

From this option you can add all the URL’s that are not articles or posts and that are part of your Website as sales pages, lead capture, who we are, contact, etc.
To make your layout work easier, you can help yourself from some of the best page builders on the market.
Some of my favorites are:
- Elementor Page Builder .
- Divi Builder (the Divi Theme designer ).
- Beaver Builder .
- Visual Composer .
One of the great advantages of having a blog is its bidirectional nature, that is, the possibility that your readers can give you their feedback about the content that you publish periodically.
Therefore, from this WordPress section you can both answer those comments and (previously) accept or reject them.
In the latter case, you can send them to the spam folder or to the trash.
As its name suggests, this is where you can edit the visual appearance of your pages and the elements that you want to be displayed and those that are not.
From here you can choose the template or theme you want to have active.
In my case it is « Jupiter Multi-Purpose Responsive Theme «.
In addition, from this option you can add those widgets or menus you want, both on the side of your website and in the footer or another additional area.
Through these plugins, WP allows you to modify, edit and add new functionalities to your digital platform.
Here you can update the versions of those that you already have installed and that you have added from the repository of this platform.
You can also add plugins from the “Add new” option , if it is found in another external marketplace.
As we said, these plugins add new functions, which will be shown in the same desktop bar or within the tools and appearance section, to be able to enter their configuration.
The section that concerns us is in charge of registering new users, in case, as in this blog, you accept guest authors.
Adding users can also be very useful for when your site is a collaborative platform, such as online magazines or collaborative projects, in which there are a large number of authors, all with various types of permissions.
Here you can export your content to other platforms, such as Blogger, Tumblr, etc. and vice versa.
In other words, bring your content from another of these platforms to your new WP, also exporting the data and settings that you may have there.
The most advisable thing is that you do not go to those types of options, unless you have enough knowledge to do so.
In addition, in this section of tools, you can also access the configuration of many of the plugins that you install.
I’m sure that after reading this article and having listened and watched each of these videos carefully, you will already know what WordPress is and how it works and its main options are configured.
As you can see, it is a very intuitive digital platform, relatively easy to handle by almost any user, due to the very little technical knowledge he has.
